Browse / Search |
| There are three ways to use the Browse / Search Function: |
 |
You can browse the entire library by Genre, from A-Z. |
 |
You can browse the Classical genre by Category (below the Genre column) and Letter of the Alphabet (below the upper toolbar). If you're looking for a specific work in a specific category, this may be faster than using Advanced Search. For example, if you're looking for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20, you need only four clicks in Browse / Search (click Concertos in the Category column, click M in the alphabet list, click Next Page and click Piano Concerto No. 20). To get to the same work in Advanced Search, you need 3 clicks (Advanced Search, Composer field, Cataogue Number / Disc Title / Composition Title fields) plus 26 keystrokes for Mozart and Piano Concerto No. 20. |
 |
You can search by composer. For example, click Composers in the Category column, click the letter with which the name of the composer starts, and then choose the composition you're looking for from the discography. Taking the example above, you will need 12 clicks to get to Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 (Composers, M, PgDn (1), Mozart, PgDn (7), Piano Concerto No. 20). By using the Composers category, you can also access the composer's biography and general information about his/her works. |
|
Advanced Search |
The Advanced Search is a complex yet simple to use search engine allowing users to enter information into multiple search fields. To access it, click Advanced Search in the upper toolbar.
You don't have to complete all fields. We suggest you select at least the appropriate Genre and Category before starting a search, so as to avoid getting mixed search results. Once you have selected your Genre and Category you may complete as many fields as you wish, the more you complete the more accurate the search results will be.

Russian and Chinese Composer Names
These are transcribed from Kyrillic and Chinese characters and are not always spelled consistently. For example, there is Miaskovksy and Myaskovsky or He Zhanhao, He Zhan-Hao, Ho Zhanhao and Ho Zhan-Hao. If in doubt, click on the magnifying glass next to the Composer field, click on the letter with which the composer's name starts and click on the spelling shown.
|
 |
Catalogue Number / Disc Title / Composition Title |
| |
If you know the catalogue number of the CD you looking for, enter it here. Since each catalogue number is unique, there is no need to fill in other search fields. In fact, anything you put in other fields will be ignored when you enter a catalogue number.
When entering abbreviations, make sure you enter period/dot and space after No. , Op. , K. , Wq. and similar abbreviations but no period/dot and only a space after BWV, HWV and similar abbreviations.

 |
Period |
| |
This field allows you to search for works by composers belonging to specific periods in music history.
Before 1400: Medieval
1400-1600: Renaissance
1600-1750: Baroque
1750-1830: Classical
1830-1900: Romantic / 19th Century
1900-2000: 20th Century
Contemporary: Living Composers
Please note that the search result will not necessarily produce a list of works composed during these years but a list of works by composers who composed the bulk of their output during these years. For example, Contemporary will produce a list of works created by living and still active composers that will also include works composed in the 20th Century. If you want to find recordings of works composed or first performed during these years please use the Year Composed fields.
|
 |
Country |
| |
Enter the country of birth of the composer or lyricist you are looking for in this field. In some cases, we have opted for the country where the composer lived and worked most of his life or with which he is associated in music history. For example, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was born in Guadeloupe but lived and worked in France most of his life and can therefore be found under France. Composers born in the former Austrian empire are listed under the country where their birthplaces are located according to today's map of Europe. However, if a composer was born in one country but lived and worked in another most of his life we decided on listing him under the latter. For example, Hummel was born in Bratislava in present-day Slovakia but can be found under Austria because he spent the most important years of his life in Vienna.

Year Composed |
| |
This allows you to find works composed during a particular period, for example between 1840 and 1920. All you need to do is enter these two years in the respective fields. You can narrow your search down further by adding other criteria. For example, by entering France into the Country field and Piano into the Instrument field, you can search for all piano music composed or first performed in France between 1840 and 1920. If you are searching for works composed in any particular year, enter that year into both boxes. If you are searching for works composed before a certain year, enter that year into the second box and leave the first box blank. If you are searching for works composed after a certain year, enter that year into the first box and leave the second box blank.

Selecting and Changing the Sound Quality |
The default setting is the highest quality you subscribed for, 128Kbps/CD Quality for the highest, 64Kbps/Near-CD Quality for the standard quality. The CD Quality button is greyed out for 64Kbps subscribers. If you want to change the quality down, because the music only streams intermittently (almost always caused by inadequate bandwidth/speed) or because you do not have access to broadband, click on the FM Quality button before selecting the music you want to play. If you want to change the quality while the music is playing, click the Stop button on the Media Player, click the FM Quality button and then click Play Selections. Follow the same procedure when switching from a lower quality to a higher quality.
